Both Angles and Casanovas were Spanish and show imagination and skill in these keyboard pieces which transcribe so well for the harp and pair well for concert performance.

The Foggy, Foggy, Dew

The Clergyman's Lamentation - This haunting melody was written by the famous blind Irish harpist, O'Carolan. Moll In The Wadd - We do not know who Moll was, or what she got stuck in, but this joyful Irish jig certainly released her from whatever it was! The Foggy, Foggy, Dew - This is one of the most famous folk tunes from the British Isles with many different words to describe a rather delicate situations.
These folk songs have been recorded by Michael Bochmann & David Watkins on their CD The Triumph of Time Part II

Sonata V for Violin & HarpSonata V for Violin & Harp Ref: DW0014
Carl Friedrich Abel
arr David Watkins

This Sonata for violin and harp is taken from the "Music Remains" of Edward Jones. The simplicity of the sonata belies its musical impact and the rhythmic writing for the violin is often symphonic in structure. I am grateful to Dr Mike Parker for giving me a copy of the original score for violin and harpsichord to which, for a concert in 2011, I added the string quartet accompaniment (see Volume XIVa)

A fine harpist, composer and harp maker whose first studies were with Christian Hochbrucker and then came to Paris where his virtuoso playing was acclaimed at the famous 'Concert Spirituel'. Sonata in C No IVSonata in C No IV Ref: DW0016
JS Bach
for Flute or Violin and Harp (with pedals - single or double action)
arr David Watkins

His extraordinary output of choral and instrumental music embraced both his humanity and his intellectual genius. As with Handel, his instrumental suites include dance movements of the period. This Sonata is for the flute or the violin with keyboard accompaniment which also sounds well on the harp. I have eliminated the last largo and minuet; they are rather weak endings for concert performance. Between the Andante - Presto and the brilliant Allegro, I have inserted a beautiful Siciliano stolen from another Sonata (4S1017).

LargoLargo Ref: DW0017
JS Bach
from the Concerto for Two Violins
arr for Two Violins & Two Harps (or two melodic instruments, harp & piano) David Watkins

I made this arrangement for a concert in Chelsea Town Hall, when I was Patron for the Charity "Concertina". Michael Bochmann and I thought it would be great if we could involve two talented young musicians - Giles Thirkettle (violin) and Verity Thirkettle (harp). This Largo is one of the most beautiful slow movements ever written and the ingenious counterpoint between the two solo violins combine to create music with the greatest emotional impact.

Aria Con Variazioni Aria Con Variazioni Ref: DW0018
GF Handel
arr David Watkins
The success of ‘Messiah’ ensured Handel his position as one of the greatest composers and a worthy contemporary of J.S. Bach. However, it is only quite recently that his creativity in operas and oratorios has revealed his exceptional genius in these genres. Throughout his life he was a brilliant keyboard player and published many harpsichord pieces. This Aria and Variations appear in a suite of pieces published by Walsh in 1732. The similarity of figurations and the key of Bb seem to link it to the Concerto in Bb that he wrote for the harpist William Powell to perform in 1734. This is entirely in the key of Bb without any accidentals, a rare occurrence in his keyboard works. Brahms used this theme for his own ‘Handel Variations’. This edition has been made from Walsh’s original 1732 volume bought in 1960 from a bookseller in Paris.

Variations on a theme of SpohrVariations on a theme of Spohr Ref: DW0019
Philip Jacob Meyer
ed. David Watkins

The arrangement of this beautiful aria was published by Birchall and Co, 140 New Bond Street, London, and is a testament of his exceptional creativity and musicianship. Mozart was Louis Spohr’s musical god and this Aria is certainly a reflection of Mozart’s genius. These variations, of medium difficulty, will be an important addition to the solo harpist’s repertoire.

Sonata in CSonata in C Ref: DW0021
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
for Violin (or Flute) & Harp with optional Cello part
Transcribed by David Watkins

Vivaldi was the most prolific of composers and very popular during his lifetime. J.S. Bach was fascinated by his energy and transcribed several of his compositions. Todaywe are captivated by his rhythmic vitality and descriptive creativity, most notably in his Four Seasons for violin and orchestra. I transcribed this beautiful Sonata from a Trio which was originally written for violin, lute and basso continuo. I found the Trio in 1961 when I was studying in Paris.
