for Four Cellos (or Cello Orchestra)
The 'Cello Company' is a modern romantic song, perhaps better described as a really soft pop work, and surely useful to incorporate onto any cello ensemble programme! It makes an ideal small set when performed before the piece 'Cello Addiction' by the same composer (and also available from Creighton's Collection'). Both pieces are conceived for four individual soloists, but work almost equally convincingly when played by an entire 'cello orchestra'. When the present piece is performed by more than a quartet, it makes sense to play divisi the many double-stops, especially in the accompanying passages. Cello Company is exactly what the title indicates - a work for cello colleagues, inviting the blending of sounds, styles and vibrato. For this reason, all instruments have interesting parts, taking it in turns to shine in moments of lyrical glory! When played by four 'solo' cellists special care should be taken on the intonation, although everything is perfectly playable to competent cellists. In this sense there are no real first, second cello etc. as all are considered equal partners in the search for a romantic yearning and highly cantabile cello playing!
